Metrorail's origins

SARCC has the custodianship of all commuter and passenger rail assets such as land in and around stations, infrastructure and rolling stock.

Metrorail transports over 1,7 million passengers on weekdays in the following major Metropolitans made out of five Regions namely:

  • Wits (Johannesburg)
  • Cape Town
  • Tshwane (Pretoria)
  • Durban
  • Eastern Cape (East London and Port Elizabeth)

The five Regions combined occupy about 478 stations with a fleet of over 270 train sets making up to 3100 coaches with each coach carrying more than 100 people.

To improve service levels and for the convenience of commuters, Metrorail was transferred to the SARCC in 2006 to ensure that an effective, safe, and efficient commuter rail service is provided to commuters. The newly consolidated SARCC has embarked on a programme of upgrading and improving stations, station facilities, rolling stock, communications systems and security at both stations and inside trains.
