Train security in the western cape goes on high alert.

Cape Town:

Metrorail Protection Services, security contractors and the Railway Police have increased their presence at key strategic points on the rail system. The preventative measure comes as a result of xenophobic violence elsewhere in the country. Stephen Ngobeni, Regional Manager of Metrorail in the Western Cape says that commuters can expect random searches on trains and at stations to ensure that no weapons are taken onto trains or stations: 'We ask our customers to bear with the inconvenience of random searches but our actions are taken with their safety at heart'.

The Protection Services staff will remain deployed in collaboration with the Police until the situation normalises.
