Minister of Tranport and of Posts and Telecommunications

Dear Dr. Welgemoed
Another milestone in the short history of the South African Rail
Commuter Corporation has been reached with this first annual report.
It is therefore a great privilege for me to report on the Corporation's
activities during its founding year.
As is the case with all new ventures, the Corporation had to
go through a learning curve to deal with the unique problems and
challenges. The Rail Commuter modus is firmly rooted in a colourful
history which stretches as far back as the steam era, right up
until today's high speed electric commuter trains. We are therefore
in the fortunate position to draw on the lessons from the past
and build on them so as to enter the competitive commuter arena
within the new South Africa with confidence.
The staff of the commuter and property divisions upon which the
Corporation's activities depend, as reflected in our logo, are
working tirelessly towards fulfilling our Statutory commission.
With the conviction that it was a wise decision to establish
an independent Corporation to give new focus to the commuting
needs of employees and businessmen, I would like to pay tribute
to Ministers Eli Louw and George Bartlett as well as the late
Dr. Wim de villiers for the part they played in the forming process.
I would also like to thank you for your own considerable contributions
- both current and future - towards ensuring the increasing effectiveness
of the Corporation.
Our thanks also go to Transnet and other contractors and interested
parties who supported us through our first year of operation with
understanding and compliance.
Kind regards,
Dr. E.L. Grove
Chairman
