Conclusion by minister of transport - mac maharaj
Johannesburg has been a city of hope over the decades as people
have flocked to it to seek their fortune. Today Park Station is
a symbol of hope for the city of Johannesburg.
The refurbished station is not just a new face for an old facility.
It is working proof of government's commitment to an efficient
and effective passenger transport system in this country.
In the past no integrated planning of land passenger transport
was done. Bus and train services ran along their own routes, while
the highly deregulated taxi industry operated without any structure.
Government gave priority to the needs of private motorists rather
than supporting the growth, co-ordination and integration of public
transport.
We in government today recognise that synergy between the three
facets of the transport triangle - home, work and leisure - is
critical if we are to transform the disjointed transport infra-structure
inherited from apartheid. We are committed to creating an efficient
intermodal system which truly addresses the transport needs of
our people.
The 22-city block development of Park Station heralds this new
era and the new approach to transport planning. It is a place
where buses, trains and taxis meet. It is a place where commuters
can change from one transport mode to another and where their
transport needs are the primary concern.
It is evidence of government's commitment to enhancing mobility
within the country, and to creating economic and social stability.
Johannesburg Park Station epitomises our vision for the future
of both the city and our country: a place where all people are
welcome, where facilities are built to serve the community and
contribute to the transformation of our society as a whole.
