Excavating and constructing the station
In front of the concourse (Noord Street side) a completely new
station came into existence with eight platforms under umbrella
roofs and baggage lifts on the east and west ends each connecting
with barrow ways. There were over six kilometres of track in the
station, 68 point and crossings and a new cabin with colour light
signalling. It was to be one of the largest job creation projects
undertaken by the government during The Depression using the labour
of poor whites.
