(Explanation: Single Track Kms = If there are 4 railway tracks running parallel for 1 km, then we have 4 single track kms, although it is only 1 route km)

2. What is the length of track not being utilised?

Some yard lines are not being used at present. These lines comprise less than 1% of the total commuter railway lines.

3. How many people can be carried in a coach?

In a train set composed of 12 coaches, an average number of 1 700 to 1860 commuters can be transported. See table below.

4. What is the difference between a commuter and passenger rail services?

In South Africa, commuter rail is the metropolitan rail transport service provided by Metrorail on behalf of SARCC, which transports urban commuters. Passenger rail is the city to city (long distance) rail transport services operated by Spoornet's Shosholoza Meyl.

5. When was the last new rail line built?

The last commuter rail line was built in 1984 at Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape Province.
